This section follows the descendants of the Woulfes who are regarded as the ancestors of most of the Woulfes living around Athea today.
This is the work of many Woulfe family researchers. The original, very extensive family tree came to me from Kathy Struck Wolfe of Iowa. Kathy Traces her ancestors to 7 Woulfe/Wolfe families from County Limerick and County Kerry who emigrated to Illinois. Some remained in the Ottowa, Illinois area and some continued on to Clinton County, Iowa. These 7 families included 3 brothers: John Richard and Hanorah Buckley Woulfe,Thomas R. and Ellen Wolfe,
Maurice Richard and Johanna Downey Woulfe, and 2 of their sisters who married Maher brothers.
Also with them were their cousins...Richard and Mary Foley Woulfe,Maurice and Ellen Carey/Kearney Woulfe
John Edmond and Margaret Mills Woulfe. Kathy is of the same line of Athea Woulfes as John P. Woulfe of Australia. He's the one who researched and wrote the book, "Woulfe, a Family History,"referred to often in this project. Sean deBhulbh of Limerick city also provided a huge family tree. Also making a major contribution is Ruth (Woulfe) Welch. The information has also been enriched with new information from many others, including John Woulfe of Australia, Declan Barron of Ennis, Ramy Brouder of Athea, Liam and Breda Walsh of County Kerry, Eileen O'Connor of Tralee, several of Kathy Woulfes' relatives in the U.S. and many others. There are also notations of information taken from a letter authored by Jane Woulfe Cooper (Aunt Dollie) in 1956.
Please note that with the use of names like Richard, John, James, Maurice, and Edmond, used from generation to generation, nicknames were added over the years to identify which Richard or which John, etc, they were talking about. These nicknames were used by the Woulfes (de Bhulbs) and have been passed down from generation to generation. Some examples of these family nicknames are "Trooper Woulfes", Barrister Woulfes, etc." The individual nicknames include, "Dicky Ned", "Wiggie","Old Ned", "Old Maurice", "Old Paddy", etc. With information collected from descendants of these Woulfe/Wolfe families the following Wolfe family information has been peiced together by Kathy Struck Wolfe of Iowa. Addrional materiel from Sean Debhulbh, Aunt Dollie, and others. She (and I!...mw) would like to thank all of these descendants for sharing old family letters, family stories, obituraries, and other documents that have helped in compiling this family record. You will also notice some family groups using Wolfe instead of Woulfe. It's a common variation, and you'll even find Wolfe gravestones right next to Woulfe family gravestones in Irish cemeteries.
Who was the original Woulfe in the Athea area? Impossible to say. As you read Limerick Woulfe history, you'll find Woulfes fleeing Limerick city heading into the wilds of Western Limerick and seeking refuge with relatives already living there. For convienience, I'm starting this family line here...
Phillip deBaluff... (1) Best guess is he may have lived from about 1520 - 1590 - if he survived the Geraldine rebellion.
Kathy's project starts with a Phillip deBaluff, listed in an early English survey. It is a first name that does not reappear for many generations. His son was Gerald Woulfe also known as Gerot deBaluff. He lived at a place called "Inis Cuais" pronounced Innish Coosh in English. It was near the present town of Rathkeale in County Limerick. So, here the family is just 5 miles North of Newcastle West in the late 1500's. * See the Limerick Woulfe page for Paul MacCotter's information on Phillip Woulfe.
For more information on the Geraldine rebellion, here's a link to an excellent explanation...
http://www.libraryireland.com/JoyceHistory/Geraldine.php
Gerot deBaluff (2) - in English, Gerald Woulfe. We guess that he lived from approx 1540-1586?
He's the son of Phillip above. Phillip and his family were living at Innis Cuais near Rathkeale. He held his land on a tenure called a "Knight's fee" from Gerald the Earl of Desmond. Gerot died during the Geraldine Rebellion when Queen Elizabeth sent marauders like Sir Walter Raleigh to murder rebel land owners and seize their property for the Queen. His 2 sons had to flee to the hills and woods of West Limerick. Because of the rough conditions, they had little time to keep records, and documents are very spotty for another 100 years or more. You can also take into account that church records were destroyed when pirates like Raleigh and others destroyed Catholic Churches and Cemetery chapels. Raleigh is the one blamed for the destruction of the Chapel at Templeathea.
***Note... Jane Woulfe Cooper also gives Gerot de Baluff or Gerald Woulfe as an Athea ancestor.
No other information. He does help fill the gap.
Maurice J Woulfe... (3) It's believed he lived from about 1630 - 1700
According to the Aunt Dollie letter, this Maurice and the James below are brothers living at Inchireagh. (also given as Inchareagh) Maurice is our next likely descendant. Kathy says in a story from Sean deBhulbh that he heard from his grandfather, Maurice was plowing his fields near the River Gale when a rider came along and his horse stumbled. The man told Maurice that Limerick had fallen. Limerick fell in 1650 and again in 1691. By a little enlightened extrapolation, we can assume that because he was plowing a field, he was a married man, placing his marraige before 1650. He had at least 2 children. ...He then disappears in history. Is he the father or uncle to.....
James Woulfe (4)... (James of Inchireagh)
...Inchireagh is a region near Athea. b1651? d1704 - He is likely son of the Maurice above. He settled near Athea - had 8 children. He died in 1704 and is buried at Templeathea - the Woulfe family cemetery.
Of the 8 children, 6 were daughters...Kathy believes 3 of the daughters emigrated to the U.S. JAMES' sons were...
Richard...(5) ... died young - apparently of exposure during a bitter winter.
Maurice J...(5) ... (b1690 d 1792) Known as "Old Maurice because he lived to be 102 years old! Hi is in Grave #2 at Templeathea in Athea.
Aunt Dollie says when his father James died, he took over the family at age 14. He is said to have provided dowries for all his sisters - quite an extraordinary feat for the times. He didn't mary until he was 40 years old. He left Inchireagh and settled at Beenmore, (also Benmore) remaining there for 30 years until his wife died. Tradition is, he could not bear the sight of his wife's grave at Templeathea, which he could see fom his home, and he took over the entire 2000 acre townland of Cratloe in March, 1760. In a letter from "Aunt Dollie" he had been eating his supper - possibly too good a one for his years. He was sitting in a corner of the kitchen in 1792 beside the fire, watching young people dance when he appeared to fall asleep and passed away. It was noticed that he had 31 of his own teeth in his mouth and the 32nd was in his waistcoat pocket! So - when he died, he was practically intact. Buried at Templeathea.
Here's where the documentation becomes a little more positive...

James began studies for the priesthood, but emigrated to the U.S. in 1819 and started a school in Virginia. He headed to Missouri to settle in Montecello, but disappeared. It's believed he was murdered in Natchez on the Mississippi.
In a letter dated 1832, James told his brothers about the wonderful land in Missouri and suggested they follow him. He went into great detail about his trip to the US and the kind people in Missouri. James is thought to be one of the first of this Woulfe family to emigrate. His estate papers found in Missouri detail the family he left behind in Ireland.
